New tax deduction for non-itemizers in 2026

Starting in 2026, a new federal tax rule allows taxpayers who take the standard deduction to claim a tax deduction for charitable giving.

How much can I deduct?

If you don't itemize your taxes, you can deduct up to $1,000 in cash donations as an individual, or up to $2,000 for married couples filing jointly. This is an above-the-line deduction, so it applies in addition to the standard deduction.

Which gifts count?

Only cash gifts made directly to 501(c)(3) public charities. Contributions to donor-advised funds, private foundations or supporting organizations do not qualify.

Does a gift to United Way of Humphreys County count?

Yes. Writing a check to your local United Way is eligible. United Way of Humphreys County is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Transferring money to a donor-advised fund or private family foundation is not eligible under this rule.
